Veteran's Story: James Whitaker
In Williamstown, New Jersey, James Whitaker, a U.S. Army Veteran, recently received home upgrades through Purple Heart Homes' Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program. With the installation of a new HVAC system and hot water heater, James' home is now safer, more comfortable and better suited to his daily needs.
This project was managed by Matt Stevenson and made possible through the support of The Home Depot Foundation, whose partnership helps bring these essential services to Veterans across the country.
A Life of Service
Born in 1960, James Whitaker served in the United States Army from 1978 to 1981, completing his military career at the rank of E-2.
James currently continues his connection to military service through Mu Beta Phi Military Fraternity, an organization committed to honoring Veterans and promoting brotherhood among service members past and present.
Lasting Effects of Service
Like many Veterans, James lives with lasting effects from his time in the military. He manages post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and ongoing issues with foot pain - both of which impact his daily comfort and mobility.
In recent years, aging systems in his home - specifically his HVAC system and hot water heater - began to fail.
How Purple Heart Homes Helped
Through the Veterans Aging in Place Program, Purple Heart Homes assessed James' needs and worked to improve his living environment. With Project Manager Matt Stevenson leading the effort and funding provided by The Home Depot Foundation, our team coordinated the replacement of both his: HVAC System, to ensure consistent heating and cooling year round, and hot water heater, for safe and dependable hot water access.
These critical improvements have restored comfort to James' home and eased the stress that can accompany a lack of basic utilities.
Our Mission in Action
Purple Heart Homes is proud to support Veterans like James through the Veterans Aging in Place Program. Whether it's structural repairs, accessibility upgrades or essential utilities, we're committed to making homes safer and more livable for those who served.
A special thank-you to The Home Depot Foundation for making this project possible, and to Project Manager Matt Stevenson for his leadership.
