Veteran's Story: David Rodriguez

In Westminster, South Carolina, a new ramp has done more than just improve access - it's restored mobility for David Rodriguez, a Vietnam-era Veteran whose decades of service to our nation are now being honored in a meaningful way. 

Thanks to Purple Heart Homes Veterans Aging in Place Program, and with the support of the Golden Corner Chapter, The Home Depot Foundation and a team of volunteers, David's home is now safer, more accessible and better suited to his needs.

A Life of Distinguished Service

Born in 1950, David Rodriguez committed over two decades of his life to military service, beginning his career in February 1968 and continuing until February 1989. David served in both the United States Air Force and the United States Marine Corps.

He served during the Vietnam War, and was honorably discharged with the rank of AMS1.

Even in retirement, David remains an active part of the Veteran community as a member of the American Legion in Westminster, South Carolina.

A Fall That Changed Everything

After a recent fall left him with a broken leg, David's mobility became limited. With seven steps leading up to his front door, even entering or exiting his home became a daily struggle. As he recovered, it became clear that something had to change.

That's when Purple Heart Homes stepped in. 

How Purple Heart Homes Helped

Through our Veterans Aging in Place Program, we assessed David's situation and determined that a custom-built ramp was needed to restoring his independence and safety. 

This project was made possible by the hard work of 11 volunteers from the Golden Corner Chapter of Purple Heart Homes who dedicated 159 total hours of labor, and funding from The Home Depot Foundation.

Together, they built a reliable ramp that now allows David to navigate his home safely and independently - without fear of falling or the need for assistance.

At Purple Heart Homes, we believe no Veteran should have to struggle to live safely in their own home - especially those who have sacrificed so much. Through our Veterans Aging in Place Program, we help heroes like David maintain their independence and quality of life as they grow older.
