Veteran's Story: Robert Reed Jr.

Last Updated 9/16/2025Posted in Veteran Stories

At Purple Heart Homes, our mission is to ensure that Veterans can age safely and with dignity in the homes they love. Through our Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program, and with the support of a North Carolina Government Grant, we were honored to serve U.S. Air Force Veteran Robert Reed Jr. with essential home repairs.

Robert's Service

Born in 1945, Robert Reed Jr. dedicated more than two decades of his life to serving our country in the U.S. Air Force. From September 1963 to October 1989, he served during the Vietnam War era, rising to the rank of Master Sergeant (MSG) before his honorable discharge.

Robert is also a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), continuing his commitment to the Veteran community even after his years of active service.

Challenge and Needs

Like many who served during the Vietnam War era, Robert faces the lasting impacts of his service. He lives with PTSD and several Agent Orange-related illnesses that affect his daily life. In addition to these health challenges, his home required critical updates, including repairs to his front porch, handrails, and doors.

These improvement were necessary not only for safety but also for ensuring that Robert can maintain his independence at home.

The Project

Led by Project Manager Lamar Austin, our team made the needed repairs to Robert's porch, handrails, and doors, strengthening the safety and functionality of his home. These updates may seem small, but they represent a huge step toward improving Robert's comfort and daily quality of life.

Gratitude to Our Partners

This project would not have been possible without the North Carolina Government Grant Program. Their continued support ensures that Veterans like Robert receive the essential housing solutions they need to live safely and independently.

Call to Action

At Purple Heart Homes, we believe no Veteran should face the challenges of aging or disability alone. Projects like Robert's are made possible through the generosity of our partners, volunteers, and supporters.
