Featured Veteran of the Month: SP5 (P), E-5 Vermelle Langford, U.S. Army

Last Updated 3/12/2026Posted in In The News, Veteran Stories

In 1964, at just 18 years old, Vermelle Langford answered the call to serve her country. Born in 1946, she stepped into the United States Army during a pivotal time in our nation's history and dedicated four years of her life to caring for others as a Clinical Specialist in the medical field.

From 1964 to 1968, SP5 (P), E-5 Langford served with honor and distinction, earning the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Her work required skill, steadiness, and compassion. Every day, she supported fellow Soldiers through medical care, living out the very values of service and selflessness that define our Armed Forces.

Today, more than five decades after her service, Ms. Langford continues to show that same quiet strength.

She has lived in her Charlotte, North Carolina home for 30 years. It's where family memories were made and today, that same home is shared with her son, his wife, and her newborn grandchild - three generations under one roof.

When she reached out to Purple Heart Homes through our Veterans Aging in Place program, she wasn't asking for much. She simply asked for help with plumbing repairs that had slowly gotten away from her.

Like so many strong, independent Veterans, she tried to manage on her own for as long as she could. But time, wear, and mounting repair costs had turned a small issue into something much bigger than expected.

During our site assessment in August 2025, our team discovered the situation was far more serious than a simple plumbing fix.

Two separate trees had fallen on Ms. Langford's home over the years. One of those incidents knocked out the electrical connection to the house. There was a severed plumbing line. Structural damage to the roof. Major issues in the bathroom. Improper past repairs had led to hidden damage that went unnoticed.

And then we found the mold.

It was extreme.

The condition of the home was deemed unlivable. Mold contamination had spread so severely that every fabric and cloth item inside had to be thrown away. Furniture, clothing, personal belongings. Everything had to be removed. It took three 20-foot dumpsters to clear the house.

For Ms. Langford and her family, it was devastating.

In the meantime, Purple Heart Homes ensured she and her family were placed in a rental home so they would be safe. They were provided furniture and three queen mattresses so they could rest with dignity during this transition.

But we did not stop there.

Because of the extent of the damage, this is no longer a small repair project. Ms. Langford's home requires a complete interior demolition; removal of walls, structural repair, floor joist, foundation repair, and an upgrade to the plumbing and electrical systems. All of this is necessary prior to a complete interior renovation.

The scope of work includes:

  • Interior home demolition and restoration
  • Foundation repair
  • Mold abatement
  • Crawl space upgrade and repair
  • Two bathrooms demolished and remodeled
  • Kitchen restoration
  • New roof installation
  • Clothing and furniture replacement
  • Removal of multiple large oak trees

This is what the Veterans Aging in Place program is designed to do. Not just fix a problem. Not just patch a leak. But ensure that a Veteran can live safely, securely, and with dignity in the home they worked a lifetime to build.

Ms. Langford served our nation as a young woman in uniform, caring for others in the Army medical field. Today, we are honored to care for her.

Her project is still ongoing. Walls are being rebuilt. Systems are being restored. A safe and healthy home is taking shape once again in Charlotte.
