Veteran's Story: Larry Yannizzi

In Seneca, South Carolina, Purple Heart Homes proudly partnered with the Golden Corner Chapter to deliver critical home updates for U.S. Marine Corps Veteran Larry Yannizzi. This project, part of the Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program, which was generously funded by The Home Depot Foundation, focused on providing bathroom accessibility improvements to enhance daily safety and comfort.

Led by Project Manager Lamar Austin, this project served not only Larry but also a second Veteran residing in the household. The result was a transformation of everyday living connections, made possible through compassionate teamwork and dedicated volunteer service.

Larry's Service:

Born in 1947, Larry Yannizzi devoted two decades of his life to military service. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1965 and served until 1985, including active duty during the Vietnam War era.

He was honorably discharged at the rank of Master Sergeant (MSGT), and his commendable service record includes:

  • Purple Heart
  • Presidential Unit Citation
  • Rifle Badge Expert (5th Award)
  • Combat Action Ribbon
  • Meritorious Mast
  • Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Stars
  • Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device
  • National Defense Service Medal
  • Good Conduct Medal with 6 Stars
  • Pistol Badge Marksman

Larry's time in the military left him with multiple service-connected conditions, including Parkinson's disease, blindness, COPD, and PTSD, all of which impact his mobility and daily quality of life.

A Community in Action:

Recognizing the need for a safer and more accessible bathroom space, Purple Heart Homes took action. Thanks to the Golden Corner Chapter, the project was completed with the support of 15 dedicated volunteers, who contributed 310 hours of service to make this vision a reality.

This work helped restore Larry's ability to live with dignity, independence, and improved safety in his own home.

Thank You to Our Partners:

The impactful project was funded by The Home Depot Foundation, a longtime and vital partner in Purple Heart Homes' mission to improve housing solutions for service-connected and aging Veterans across the country.

Their support continues to make meaningful projects like this possible, one Veteran, one home, and one life-changing upgrade at a time.

Our Mission in Action:

Every ramp, bathroom modification, or home repair tells a story of gratitude and perseverance. For Larry Yannizzi, the transformation of his bathroom isn't just a structural change, it's a powerful reminder that his service is remembered, and his needs matter.
