Veteran's Story: Nicholas Geiben
At Purple Heart Homes, we are proud to complete another project through our Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program, made possible thanks to the support of The Home Depot Foundation. With the dedicated labor of our Golden Corner Chapter, we recently completed a ramp and deck for U.S. Army Veteran Nicholas Geiben in Seneca, South Carolina.
Service and Sacrifice
Born in 1942, Nicholas answered the call to serve his country during the Vietnam War era, enlisting in the U.S. Army on September 24, 1964. He served until September 7, 1966, and was discharged at the rank of E-4. His dedication and skills earned him the National Defense Service Medal and the Marksman Rifle Badge.
Meeting the Need
As Nichola has grown older, he has faced increasing health challenges, including balance and stability issues, back pain, and hearing loss. His home was no longer accessible in a safe and reliable way, making day-to-day tasks more difficult. Recognizing his need, our Golden Corner Chapter stepped in to build a new deck and ADA-accessible ramp to restore safety and independence.
Volunteer Spirit
This project came to life through the heart and dedication of 14 volunteers from the Golden Corner Chapter, who contributed 114 volunteer hours. Their hard work not only provided Nicholas with a secure and accessible home but also demonstrated the power of community support in honoring those who have served.
Gratitude to Our Partners
We are thankful to The Home Depot Foundation for their continued partnership and to out Golden Corner Chapter volunteers for their time and commitment. Together, we were able to deliver a project that will make a lasting impact on Nicholas's quality of life
Call to Action
At Purple Heart Homes, we believe no Veteran should struggle to live safely and independently in their own home. Projects like Nicholas's are only possible through the support of our partners and volunteers. If you'd like to join us in making a difference, consider donating, volunteering, or becoming a partner today. Together, we can continue to honor Veterans by serving them at home.
