Veteran Story: Stanley Meriwether

For Purple Heart Homes, every project is about more than construction. It is about restoring safety, dignity, and peace of mind for the Veterans who have served our country. In Indianapolis, Indiana, that mission came to life through a Veterans Aging in Place project for U.S. Army Veteran Stanley Meriwether.

Stanley's story reflects the quiet strength of many Veterans whose service shaped their lives long after they returned home. With the support of dedicated partners, volunteers, and funders, Purple Heart Homes was proud to help improve the safety of his home and support his ability to age in place with confidence.

Honoring Stanley's Service

Stanley Meriwether was born in 1955 and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. He entered service in 1976 and was medically discharged later that same year, holding the rank of Private (E-2). Though his time in uniform was brief, his service and sacrifice remain an important part of his story.

The Need for Support

As Veterans age, even small home modifications can make a meaningful difference in daily life and long-term safety. Through Purple Heart Homes' Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) program, Stanley was identified as needing an exterior improvement to help secure his property and enhance overall safety at his home in Indianapolis.

Project Scope and Completion

This VAIP project began on April 23, 2025, and was completed on December 31, 2025. The scope of work focused on replacing an outdated fence to improve durability and security around the property.

The Purple Heart Homes team and partners:

  • Removed an old 5-foot chain link fence
  • Installed 80 feet of new 5-foot black vinyl chain link fencing

This upgrade provides a stronger, longer-lasting solution that enhances both safety and peace of mind for Stanley and his household.

Community and Partner Support

Projects like this are only possible through the generosity and teamwork of mission-driven partners and volunteers.

Funding support for this project was provided by The Home Depot Foundation, whose continued commitment to serving Veterans helps Purple Heart Homes deliver critical housing solutions nationwide.

Imperial Fence Supply contributed in-kind materials, helping ensure the project could be completed efficiently and with high-quality resources.

Volunteers and community support included:

This collaboration reflects the power of community when organizations and individuals come together to serve those who served us.

A Lasting Impact

While the improvements may seem simple, the impact is significant. The new fencing provides added safety, security, and confidence for Stanley and his household as they continue to make their home a place of comfort and stability.

At Purple Heart Homes, we believe every Veteran deserves a safe place to call home. Stanley's project is one more step toward fulfilling that promise.
