Veteran's Story: Evelyn Diaz Suarez
At Purple Heart Homes, we are proud to serve Veterans through our Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program, made possible thanks to the support of our partners like The Home Depot Foundation. Recently, with the help of our Puerto Rico Chapter, we completed a much-needed home improvement project for U.S. Army Veteran Evelyn Diaz Suarez in Arroyo, Puerto Rico.
Born in 1960, Evelyn served in the U.S. Army from 1981-1987 and again from 1999-2011, including during the Operation Iraqi Freedom Era. She was honorably discharged at the rank of E-5. Throughout her years of service, Evelyn demonstrated a commitment to her country, but like many Veterans, she continues to face the lasting effects of her service. Evelyn lives with several service-connected injuries, including chronic low back pain and chondromalacia patellae, among others.
When Evelyn reach out to us, her most pressing need was a new roof. Her old roof posed safety risks and made her home difficult to maintain. Our Puerto Rico Chapter, with the help of seven volunteers who contributed 84 volunteer hours, worked together to replace the roof and ensure Evelyn's home is safe and secure once again.
We are honored to have been a part of this project and grateful to The Home Depot Foundation for their continued partnership in helping us provide housing solutions for service-connected disabled and aging Veterans.
At Purple Heart Homes, every project is a promise: We aim to never leave a Veteran behind. With the help of our partners and volunteers, we are changing lives one home at a time. You can be part of this mission too.
Get involved today, whether through volunteering, donating, or spreading the word, and help us serve more Veterans like Evelyn.
