Veteran Story: Jorge Rivera
In Guanica, Puerto Rico, Purple Heart Homes, alongside the members of the Puerto Rico Chapter, proudly completed home repairs for U.S. Army Veteran Jorge Rivera. This project, part of the Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program, was funded through our valued partnership with The Home Depot Foundation.
Born in 1928, Jorge served his country with honor during the Korean War era, from November 16, 1950, to January 2, 1952, achieving the rank of Corporal before his honorable discharge. He is an active member of American Legion Post 49.
Jorge's home suffered severe damage from Hurricanes Irma and Maria, followed by earthquakes. The storms and seismic activity left him with multiple hazards, electrical issues throughout the house, no hot water, un-level flooring, and dangerous roof leaks. These challenges were especially difficult as Jorge battles cancer, high blood pressure, and mobility issues in his later years.
The Purple Heart Homes Puerto Rico Chapter addressed these critical needs, restoring safety, comfort, and dignity to Jorge's home. By repairing the damage, we've helped ensure he can live independently in a secure and functional environment.
This project stands as a testament to the power of community, partnership, and the commitment to never leave a Veteran behind.
