Veteran's Story: Natalie McDonald
At Purple Heart Homes, we are honored to serve those who have served our country. Through our Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program and with the support of The Home Depot Foundation, we recently completed a project for U.S. Navy Veteran Natalie McDonald in Amherst, Virginia. This project was brought to life by the dedicated volunteers of our Central Virginia Chapter.
Natalie's Service
Natalie McDonald was born in 1955 and went on to serve her country in the United States Navy. From August 2, 1982, to July 2, 1992, Natalie working in the field of data processing and was honorably discharged at the rank of Data Processing Second Class.
Her decade of service reflects a commitment to her country, and today she continues to face health challenges that stem from the passage of time and her service.
The Need
Natalie's mobility has been impacted by chronic osteoarthritis, a previous hip replacement, an upcoming knee replacement surgery. These health issues made navigating her home safely increasingly difficult, especially with limited accessibility at her entrance.
Recognizing the critical need, Purple Heart Homes stepped in to provide the improvement necessary for her safety and independence.
The Project
Led by Project Manager Matt Stevenson, the Central Virginia Chapter of Purple Heart Homes took on the task of building a new ramp and deck for Natalie's home.
This effort included 14 volunteers, who contributed over 61 volunteer hours to complete the project. Their dedication ensured Natalie could safely and comfortably move in and out of her home, restoring both independence and peace of mind.
