Veteran's Story: David Wilcher

On a cold January day in Bedford, Virginia, the Central Virginia Chapter of Purple Heart Homes,  in partnership with the Lynchburg Area Veterans Council (LAVC), came together to support U.S. Air Force Veteran David Wilcher through the Veterans Aging in Place Program.

With Project Manager Tim Bates leading the project, volunteers worked in freezing temperatures to construct a 36-foot-long wheelchair ramp, an addition that restored independence to a Veteran unable to safely navigate his own home.

David's Service

David Wilcher, born in 1942, served in the United States Air Force from December 1963 to late 1967, during the Vietnam War era. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant and has remained connected to the Veteran community through his membership with the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

A Veteran in Need

Following a serious fall and spinal fusion surgery, David became bedridden, facing major mobility challenges. Without a ramp, safely entering or exiting his home was nearly impossible.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, volunteers from the Purple Heart Homes' Central Virginia Chapter, and local partners, took action.

Restoring Safety and Dignity

The 36-foot-ramp was completed despite cold temperatures, thanks to the determination of volunteers and the commitment of the local community. Their work ensures David can now safely leave his home, attend medical appointments, and reconnect with his community.

Our Mission in Action

At Purple Heart Homes, we believe that no Veteran should be left behind, especially when facing challenges tied to their health or service. The ramp built for David Wilcher shows how community collaboration can make a direct and lasting difference in a Veterans life.
