Veteran's Story: Sergeant Benjamin Cherico

Last Updated 4/14/2025Posted in Veteran Stories

Meet Sergeant Benjamin Cherico, a proud U.S. Marine and Veteran of both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, Benjamin's story reflects the strength and sacrifice of a new generation of warriors.

Thanks to the support of Purple Heart Homes, Benjamin's property is now safer and more functional, giving him the security and peace of mind he's long earned.

A Life of Service

Born in 1983, Benjamin joined the United States Marin Corps on September 29, 2004. During nearly a decade of active duty, Benjamin served in some of the most demanding environments - including deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

He was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant (E-5) on January 30, 2013, having built a decorated record of achievement that includes: Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Benjamin's military career reflects a commitment to leadership, integrity and courage - values he carries with him in civilian life.

Injuries That Last Beyond the Battlefield

Benjamin's time in uniform came with a cost. He now lives with a 360-degree tear in his left shoulder, a lower back injury and a left knee injury - all conditions that affect his mobility and everyday comfort.

While he manages these challenges with the grit of a Marine, certain home and property conditions posed real dangers, particularly due to drainage and erosion issues that has worsened overtime.

How Purple Heart Homes Helped

Understanding the importance of a safe and stable environment, Purple Heart Homes stepped in to assist with critical property improvements around Benjamin's home.

The project included: Road erosion control to stabilize the terrain, drainage management to prevent water damage and flooding and grading to level the property and improve access and safety.

These improvements, though often unseen by passerby, have made a major difference in Benjamin's daily life, allowing him to move around his home and property with increased confidence and reduced risk.

Our Mission in Action

At Purple Heart Homes, our mission is to ensure every Veteran lives with dignity and security they deserve. Whether it's a new roof, accessible entry way or erosion control like Benjamin's, every project is a promise fulfilled - and none of it would be possible without the generous support of our partners.

Special thanks to the North Carolina grant program for helping make this project a reality and investing in the well-being of those who served.

Join us in supporting those who have sacrificed for our country. Donate, volunteer or spread the word - and help us build a better future, one home at a time.
