Veteran's Story: Markum Acierno

Last Updated 6/10/2025Posted in Veteran Stories

In Ohio, U.S. Marine Corps Veteran Markum Acierno received home repairs through Purple Heart Homes' Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program, improving the safety and structure of his home. When Markum noticed some problems with his chimney, he turned to Purple Heart Homes for assistance - and the Northeast Ohio Chapter answered the call.

With Project Manager Tim Bates leading the effort, the repairs helped preserve the integrity of Markum's home.

A Proud Marine with a Lasting Legacy

Born in 1960, Markum Acierno served in the United States Marine Corps from 1980 to 1983, earning the rank of E-4. Earning multiple recognitions, including: Rifle Expert Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and a Letter of Appreciation.

His military career was marked by a deep sense of commitment to his fellow Marines and his country. Like many Veterans, Markum continues to live with a service-connected condition - hearing tinnitus, which is a common but challenging result of long-term noise exposure in the military.

A Call for Help Close to Home

Recently, Markum noticed growing issues with his chimney, which was becoming a structural concern. As the damage worsened, he knew it could impact the overall safety of his home. Unsure of where to turn, he reached out to Purple Heart Homes through the Veterans Aging in Place Program - and our team was ready to assist.

How Purple Heart Homes Helped

Led by Project Manager Tim Bates, the Northeast Ohio Chapter evaluated the damage and moved forward with repairs to Markum's chimney to prevent further deterioration and ensure the home remained structurally sound.

Our Mission in Action

At Purple Heart Homes, we know that maintaining a home can be difficult as Veterans age - especially for those living with service-connected conditions. Through the Veterans Aging in Place Program, we're proud to serve those who served us.

Special thanks to the Northeast Ohio Chapter and Project Manager Tim Bates for making this project possible and continuing to serve Veterans in their local communities.
