Veteran's Story: Mike Stubbs

Last Updated 8/3/2025Posted in Veteran Stories

In Harrisburg, North Carolina, U.S. Army Veteran Mike Stubbs received a roof replacement through Purple Heart Homes' Veterans Aging in Place Program and partnership from Owens Corning as well as their Platinum Preferred Contractor, Merritt Roofing LLCreflecting what's possible when communities come together to serve those who served.

A Veteran of Honor and Sacrifice

Mike Stubbs was born in 1947 and enlisted in the United States Army, where he served during the Vietnam War era from June 10, 1966 to June 9, 1968. He held the rank of Sergeant and served with the HHD 7th Battalion, 2D BCT Brigade.

During his service, Mike experienced intense combat and sustained a gunshot wound to the right side of his neck, along with shrapnel wounds. These injuries led to ongoing nerve and disk damage in his neck.

Mike is a proud member of:

  • Military Order of the Purple Heart (Commander, Chapter 634)
  • Disabled American Veterans (DAV)
  • Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)

His military decorations include:

  • Purple Heart
  • Bronze Star Medal
  • Combat Infantryman's Badge
  • Vietnam Service and Campaign Medals
  • National Defense Service Medal
  • Good Conduct Medal
  • Marksman Bage (M-14)

Addressing a Critical Home Need

Mike reached out to Purple Heart Homes due to the deteriorating condition of his roof. The aging structure posed a risk of leaks and weather damage.

Through Purple Heart Homes' Veterans Aging in Place Program, Mike's roof was fully replaced, restoring the safety and integrity of his home.
