Veteran's Story: James Harris

Last Updated 8/8/2025Posted in Veteran Stories

In Eden, North Carolina, Army Veteran James Harris was the recipient of an accessibility improvement to his home through Purple Heart Homes' Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program.

With the help of Project Manager Lamar Austin, this project provided James with a new deck and ADA-compliant ramp, restoring his ability to enter and exit his home safely and independently.

James' Service

Born in 1957, James Harris served in the United States Army from June 1, 1979, to September 14, 1980. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Private (PV2) and proudly earned the Marksmanship Qualification Badge (M-16 Rifle) and the Expert Qualification Badge (Hand Grenade) during his time and service.

A Veteran in Need

James suffered a stroke that resulted in the loss of mobility on his right side and the loss of his right eye, significantly impacting his ability to live independently. Navigating stairs and safely accessing his home had become a serious challenge.

Understanding the urgency of his situation, James reached out to Purple Heart Homes for help, and our team answered the call.

A Safe and Lasting Solution

Thanks to the Veterans Aging in Place Program and funding support from a North Carolina Government Grant, a new ADA-compliant ramp and deck were installed in James' home. These upgrades now allow James to move safely in and out of his house, regaining some of the freedom and independence he deserves.

Our Mission in Action

At Purple Heart Homes, we believe no Veteran should have to face physical barriers at home, especially those caused by service-related injuries or disabilities.

Thanks to our partners, volunteers, and dedicated staff like Lamar Austin, we continue to honor our Veterans by helping them age in place with safety and dignity.
