Veteran Story: Foy Wellman

Last Updated 1/6/2026Posted in Veteran Stories

Purple Heart Homes is honored to serve U.S. Army Veteran Foy Wellman, whose dedication and service during the Vietnam War era reflects a lifetime of commitment and resilience. Through the Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) program, Purple Heart Homes was able to support Foy with critical home modifications that will help him remain safe, independent, and comfortable in his home.

About the Veteran

Foy Wellman was born in 1942 and served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 during the Vietnam War era. He held the rank of Specialist 5 (T), E-5, and served as a vehicle mechanic, a vital role responsible for keeping military equipment operational. For his service, Foy was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.

Today, Foy resides in Statesville, North Carolina, where he shared his home with one other household member.

Identifying the Need

As Foy aged, accessibility and safety within his home became increasingly important. He was in need of a 14-foot-ramp to safely enter and exit his home and maintain independence. During a site visit, Project Manager Valerie Black identified an additional and urgent concern: an excessive water leak that posed a serious risk to his home's safety and livability.

Addressing this issue quickly became a priority to ensure Foy's home remained a safe place to live.

The Work Completed

Through the Veterans Aging in Place program, Purple Heart Homes coordinated the following improvements of Foy's home:

  • Installation of a 14-foot accessibility ramp
  • Emergency water line repair
  • Shower and toilet upgrades

These modifications significantly improved safety, accessibility, and comfort for both members of the household.

Community Support in Action

This project was made possible through strong community partnerships and generous support. Funding for the project was provided through a partnership with Lowe's. In addition, United Federal Credit Union donated $4,000 to sponsor the ramp build portion of the project and volunteered alongside Purple Heart Homes to help construct the ramp under PHH guidance.

JP's Plumbing & Heating, Inc. stepped in quickly to complete the emergency water line repair, ensuring the issue was resolved safely and efficiently.

Volunteers Making a Difference

Eight dedicated volunteers contributed a total of 64 volunteer hours to this project. Their time and commitment directly impacted the live of two people, helping ensure Foy could continue living safely and independently in his home.

A Lasting Impact

For Veterans like Foy Wellman, these improvements are more than construction projects. They represent dignity, security, and the reassurance that their service has not been forgotten. Purple Heart Homes is grateful for the opportunity to give back to a Veteran who gave so much for our country.
