Veteran Story: Joseph Thomas Jr.

Last Updated 4/24/2026Posted in Veteran Stories

At Purple Heart Homes, our mission is rooted in one simple belief: every Veteran deserves a safe place to call home. For Vietnam-era Veteran Joseph Thomas Jr., that belief became a reality through our Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) program, ensuring his home now supports his health, safety, and independence.

A Life of Service

Born in 1949, Joseph served our country honorably in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971, during the Vietnam War. He completed his serve as a Specialist 4 (E-4) and earned numerous awards recognizing his dedication and bravery, including the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.

Like many Veterans of his generation, Joseph continues to carry the physical effects of his service. He is 100% service-connected disabled, with injuries to his knee, back, right foot, and ankle. Despite these challenges, he remains connected to the Veteran community as a proud member of the American Legion VFW.

The Need for Critical Home Modifications

Before our team stepped in, Joseph's home presented serious daily obstacles. His shower was not handicap accessible, making bathing unsafe and extremely difficult. Both the front and back decks, along with the ramp, had severe rot, creating dangerous egress routes that limited his ability to safely enter and exit his home.

These conditions not only restricted Joseph's mobility but also placed hime at constant risk of injury. For a Veteran already facing significant physical limitations, his home was no longer the safe haven it should be.

The Work That Changed Everything

Through the VAIP program, Purple Heart Homes completed critical accessibility improvements to restore safety and dignity to Joesph's daily life. The project included:

  • Installation of a new ADA-accessible shower
  • Construction of a new ramp and deck to replace unsafe, rotted structures

These modifications now allow Joseph to safely move in and out of his hime and shower independently, providing peace of mind for both him and his household.

Powered by Community Support

This life-changing project was made possible through the generous support of Lowe's and the North Carolina Government, along with partnership of Bath Fitter. Additionally, 19 dedicated volunteers contributed 92 volunteer hours, giving their time and talents to ensure Joseph's home met his needs.

Together, this collective effort impacted two household members, reinforcing the power of community when we really around our Veterans

Moving Forward with Dignity and Independence

For Joseph, these improvements mean more than just repairs. They mean renewed independence, safer daily routines, and the reassurance that his service has not been forgotten.

At Purple Heart Homes, we are honored to serve Veterans like Joseph Thomas Jr. His story is a reminder of why we do this work and why continued support is essential.

If you believe, as we do, that no Veteran should struggle in their own home, we invite you to stand with us. Together, we can continue building safer homes and stronger futures for those who served.

Because no Veteran should ever be left behind.
