Veteran's Story: James Chesire

In West Virginia, U.S. Army Veteran James Cheshire is now living more safely and comfortably thanks to vital home updates provided through Purple Heart Homes' Veterans Aging in Place Program (VAIP). This project, managed by Tim Bates, addressed issues with James's HVAC system and gas line - ensuring a healthier, more stable home environment for a decorated Vietnam-era Veteran.

Generous support from The Home Depot Foundation and the Mental Illness & Kindness Endowment (MIKE) helped bring this project to life and reflect our mission of serving those who have served us.

A Veteran of Valor

Born in 1950, James Cheshire enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1968 to 1971 during the Vietnam War era. His service was marked by bravery, technical skill, and commitment - all of which earned him a distinguished list of military honors, including: Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Expert (Rifle) Badge.

James was honorably discharged at the rank of E-4, and his record speaks to the sacrifice and discipline he displayed throughout his time in uniform.

Essential Needs at Home

Now in his 70s, James has faced growing challenges at home. He contacted Purple Heart Homes for assistance with two critical issues: A failing HVAC system, leaving him without reliable heating and cooling, and the need for a safe and functional gas line installation.

For someone living with the long-term effects of military service and aging, these repairs were urgent and essential.

How Purple Heart Homes Helped

Under the leadership of Project Manager Tim Bates, Purple Heart Homes assessed James's home and addressed both issues head-on by installing a new HVAC system to ensure year-round comfort and air quality, and completing a safe, code-compliant gas line installation to restore full home functionality.

These repairs were made possible through the generous support of The Home Depot Foundation and the Mental Illness & Kindness Endowment (MIKE), whose contributions reflect the power of donations and partnerships.
