Two Veteran Home Ownership Opportunities Available in North Carolina

Last Updated 10/29/2026 • Posted in In The News

Two homes in North Carolina are currently available to qualifying Veterans through the Purple Heart Homes Veteran Home Ownership Program (VHOP), offering an opportunity to purchase a new home with significant financial assistance.

Through VHOP, qualified Veterans purchase a home for 65% of its appraised value, with the remaining 35% provided as deferred assistance through Purple Heart Homes. For these homes currently available in New Bern, that means $118,000 in assistance toward homeownership.

This newly constructed home in New Bern features three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and approximately 1,400 square feet of living space.

Home Value: $339,900
VHOP Assistance: $118,000

For a qualifying Veteran, the $118,000 in assistance significantly reduces the amount that must be financed to purchase the home.

How VHOP Makes Homeownership More Attainable

The Veteran Home Ownership Program is designed to reduce financial barriers to homeownership while helping Veterans build long-term housing stability and equity.

Through the program, eligible Veterans have the opportunity to purchase newly constructed or newly renovated homes made available through Purple Heart Homes.

The home is independently appraised, and the Veteran finances 65% of the appraised value through a Purple Heart Homes preferred lending partner or a mortgage lender of their choice. Purple Heart Homes provides the remaining 35% as deferred assistance, with no monthly payments required on that amount.

After the Veteran has owned and occupied the home for five years and continues to meet program requirements, the deferred assistance is fully forgiven.

For example, on a home appraised at $300,000, the Veteran would finance $195,000 rather than the full $300,000. Purple Heart Homes would provide the remaining $105,000 as deferred assistance.

This can help reduce the Veteran's monthly mortgage payment, the amount of interest paid over the life of the loan, and some of the upfront financial barriers that can make purchasing a home difficult. At the same time, the Veteran has an opportunity to build equity and establish long-term stability in a home of their own.
