Veteran's Story: Robert Steele

Last Updated 7/16/2025Posted in Veteran Stories

In Charlotte, North Carolina, 90-year-old U.S. Army Veteran Robert Steele recently received important home repairs through Purple Heart Homes' Veterans Aging in Place Program.

With funding from the North Carolina Grant Program and Lowe's along with support from Project Manager Matt Stevenson, Robert's home is now safer and more functional after a roof replacement, new gutters, a ramp, landscaping work, and an ADA-compliant bathroom renovation.

Robert's Service

Robert Steele was born in 1935. He served in the United States Army from June 27, 1955, to April 12, 1957, during the Korean War era. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Private First Class (PFC). During his service, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal.

Health and Home Concerns

After experiencing a stroke, Robert reached out to Purple Heart Homes for help with repairs to his roof, bathroom, and kitchen. His health made it difficult for him to manage these issues on his own.

The home also had safety hazards that needed immediate attention, including roof leaks and an outdated bathroom that was not accessible.

Project Timeline and Work Completed

December 2023: Robert's roof was replaced by Owens Corning at no cost.

January 2024: New gutters were installed to prevent water damage.

May 2024: Volunteers built a ramp and completed landscaping to improve exterior access.

September 2024: Work started on a new ADA-compliant bathroom. During this process, it was discovered the bathroom foundation had to be replaced.

December 2024: Final inspections were completed for the foundation and plumbing.

The bathroom is now complete. The only remaining work is a new electrical panel, which is required by local code. This will be funded by Lowe's.
