Community Project: American Legion Gresham-Baker Post 66

Last Updated 6/30/2025Posted in Veteran Stories

In Mooresville, North Carolina, American Legion Gresham-Baker Post 66 received a facility upgrade thanks to Purple Heart Homes.

The post, chartered in 1920, serves as a gathering point for Veterans and community members. When one of their outdoor ramps became unsafe, they reached out to Purple Heart Homes with a request:

"One of our ramps is in need of repair and I was hoping Purple Heart Homes would be able to repair or replace the ramp. The ramp is in poor condition and someone could get hurt."

With Project Manager Matt Stevenson leading the effort, the ramp was fully replaced, and additional improvements were made to the surrounding property.

What the Project Included

The project focused on safety, accessibility, and appearance. The work included:

  • A new ramp installation to improve access and prevent injuries
  • Landscaping around the structure to create a cleaner and more welcoming space
  • Painting to improve the property's appearance

A total of 11 volunteers contributed 56 hours to complete the project - including volunteer support from Food Lion, whose team members joined in hands-on work to help bring this transformation to life.

Impact on the Community

The upgraded space serves an estimated 250 individuals, including more than 100 Veterans, who use this post for meetings, events, and support services. With the repairs completed, the facility is safer, more accessible, and better equipped to continue serving the community.

Our Partners Made it Possible

This project was completed with the generous support of:
