Veteran's Story: Gerald Inman

Last Updated 3/31/2026

In Sparta, North Carolina, U.S. Army Veteran Gerald Inman received an accessibility ramp through Purple Heart Homes' Veterans Aging in Place Program.

With support from Lowe's and Project Manager Lamar Austin, a new ramp was built at Gerald's home, giving him safe and reliable access between his house and vehicle, something that had been a daily challenge due to ongoing mobility limitations.

Service and Sacrifice

Gerland Inman, born in 1944, served in the United States Army from May 20, 1964, to May 19, 1970, during the Vietnam War era. He was honorably discharged with the rank of SP4 E-4 (T) after six years of service.

His military achievements include:

  • Expert Badge (MG M-60)
  • Sharpshooter Badge (Rifle M-1)

Today, Gerald remains active in the Veteran community as a member of VFW Post 7034 and American Legion Post 542 in Alleghany County.

A Need for Access and Independence

Gerald is a cancer survivor who now faces ongoing mobility issues. He uses a wheelchair and scooter to move around, but lacked a safe and accessible way to get from his home to his car.

The need for a ramp created obstacles to everyday activities and posed a safety risk - something Purple Heart Homes wanted to solve.

How Purple Heart Homes Helped

Thanks to the guidance of Project Manager Lamar Austin and funding from Lowe's, Purple Heart Homes built a new ramp at Gerald's home.

Thank You to Our Partners

This project was made possible through the generous support of Lowe's, whose ongoing partnership with Purple Heart Homes helps Veterans across the country age in place safely.
