Veteran's Story: Thomas Ward

Last Updated 8/14/2025Posted in Veteran Stories

In Pfafftown North Carolina, Purple Heart Homes proudly completed another impactful project through our Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program and generous funding from Lowe's, this time for U.S. Navy Veteran Thomas Ward. With the leadership of Project Manager Lamar Austin, the team addressed critical home renovations that improved both safety and accessibility for this deserving Veteran.

Thomas' Service

Thomas Ward was born in 1954 and served in the United States Navy from November 16, 1973, to June 18, 1976, during the Vietnam War era. He was honorably discharged at the rank of E3.

During his time in service, Thomas was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, recognizing his honorable and faithful service during a time of national conflict. Today, he continues to manage the long term effects of service-connected injuries, including mental health challenges, depression, and knee problems.

A Mission of Accessibility

When Thomas reached out to Purple Heart Homes, he had multiple urgent needs: his home required flooring replacement, ADA-compliant bathroom renovations, and driveway repair to ensure he could move safely and comfortably within his home and surrounding property.

Thanks to careful planning, skilled volunteer coordination, and dedicated execution, our team completed all components of the project, bringing greater comfort, dignity, and peace of mind to Thomas' daily life.

Thank You to our Partners

This project was made possible through funding from Lowe's and a North Carolina Government Grant. Their ongoing commitment to the wellbeing of Veterans has allowed Purple Heart Homes to deliver meaningful impact in communities across the state.

Our Mission in Action

Each home we improve reflects our shared promise to honor and care for those who served. For Thomas Ward, this projects represents more than just home improvements, it's a renewed sense of safety, self-sufficiency, and the knowledge that his sacrifice has not been forgotten.
